Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crocheting small yarn figures, although sometimes they can be knitted. THe word ami means crochet or knitted, and kurumi means wrapping. If you do a google search for amigurumi, you'll find images of adorable little toys all made of yarn. These toys are made with a variety of yarn and stuffed with polyfiber. I prefer to make mine with acrylic yarn because cotton yarn makes my wrists ache.
What kind of hooks are used?
You can use any kind but a smaller hook size is preferred. I stick to 2.25mm-3.50mm. The smaller hooks make for tight stitches. You should not see any holes or stuffing through the ami.
Most amis start with a magic circle. A magic circle is a way to begin crocheting in round by crocheting the first round into a loop and then pulling the loop tight. Another way to do this is to chain 2, crochet into the first loop, then tighten.
